Further to recent messages on the Raid Australia Facebook page, the committee has concluded that the Raid Australia 2020, The Desert Raid, should now be called Raid Australia 2024 to reflect the year in which it will be held.
It is proposed to keep the original route unchanged, which will start in Baldivis, Western Australia and finish in Gayndah, Queensland. The start date will be Saturday 3 August 2024 and finish date will be Saturday 31 August 2024.
Due to inflation since the raid was originally planned, it will be necessary to increase the entry fee to cover increased costs. The adult entry fee will be increased from $650 to $900 and the child fee from $325 to $450. These fees will cover permit fees for restricted areas, caravan park entry, meals where provided, car stickers, T shirts, documentation and sundry expenses.
Those who have registered previously will be given the opportunity to pay the difference and remain registered, or if you no longer wish to participate you may have your funds refunded. It is proposed to open entries again shortly for new registrants and all entries will close on 31 March 2024. The committee believes that the number of 2CVs and derivatives should be limited to 40 and that there should be about 5 or 6 4WD backup vehicles.
If maximum numbers are reached, entries will be accepted on a first come first served basis.
A group of raiders recently surveyed the part of the route across the Anne Beadell Highway and deemed that it is still suitable for our purposes. It is rough and corrugated in parts and any 2CVs participating will need to be prepared to a high standard. (Please see separate document on this site re car preparation.)
The draft itinerary document shows the route and dates and should remain the same except that there may be some detail differences in terms of where campsites, caravan parks and meals are located.
Entry forms and further information will be provided here and through the Raid Australia
Facebook page shortly.
Cheers,
Chris Bennet, Raid Leader for 2020/2024
