Raid 2020

Dates

Raid 2020 starts on 1 August and finishes on 28 August.

Route

The proposed route is a west/east crossing of the continent, with some similarities to the first raid, Raid 88.
The proposed starting point is Baldivis in Western Australia, then going to Wave Rock, Kalgoorlie, Laverton and across the Ann Beadell Highway to Coober Pedy.
Then we will travel to William Creek, Marree and up the Birdsville Track to Birdsville.
After that we go to Longreach, and then Gayndah.

The final route will not be finalised until August 2019.

Find the current draft itinerary here.

Registration

Bookings and registration are expected to open in late September.

G'day Raiders and interested parties. Raid Australia 2020 is currently postponed to start in August 2021, but the organising committee is planning to have a meeting soon to decide whether it is still practicable to proceed this year.
We would appreciate constructive input on this.
There are many unknowns which will make it difficult to run this year, including closure of state and international borders, quarantining of international arrivals, uncertain roll out times of vaccines etc.
I am mindful that our international entrants need plenty of lead time to plan their trips, so I think we will need to make a decision soon.
Personally, I am leaning towards postponing for another year.
Cheers, Chris

Christopher Bennet I think you have nailed it. Too many unknowns in the remaining lead-time. For those with itchy raiding feet..better to muster a small group locally and do a local week away or a couple of weekend camps etc. Minimal organisation and easy to cancel should that be required due to changed Covid circumstances .Cheers Bob & Gaye Herbert.

My heart says a resounding no, but my head says yes. We would love to take part in our first raid but agree that there are still a lot of uncertainties this year. I agree with Gaye and Bob, it’s an ideal opportunity for some smaller ‘raids’. Thanks for all your hard work and we will raid with you one day. Here’s to 2022.

Bonjour Chris, I am still ready to be with you anytime Greg and I still registered, but I agree too many unknowns. Cross fingers and stay optimiste. Take care and happy new year.Stéphane

I put my hand up for postponing until 2022. Raid Australia has always had international entries and I can’t see any chance of that being able to happen this year. The whole of Australia is still in flux and until we, and most of the rest of the world, are vaccinated we will continue to be so. By 2022 hopefully 🙏 🤞🤞, we will be such.

Our raid to Cape York is also in doubt. Nobody can plan anything these days. As mentioned each state can do mini raid within their own state. Luckily Oz is big enough for fulfilling raids. Should internal borders open come August alternations are easy when dealing with small groups. Europeans has 0 chances or organizing anything + very expensive for 2 people to travel to Oz.

À Yes for 2022 It takes some time to negotiate a container send the cars All information we can get from down and under is that the situation is complicated even for Aussies We will wait another year Cheers Thierry & Patrice

Chris, a wise choice - one really doesn’t know what is happening with COVID even tomorrow, next week etc. , & I’m sure we can all wait- to be sure of the whole situation before having a grand time

I suspect this is a wise move.

Agree 100%. Wait until it’s safe .

Thanks for your thoughts Christopher Bennet, like all previous responders, I'm ready to go but the current and foreseeable unknowns make a postponement till 2022 the most sensible option.

Because of the many unknowns it will not be possible to make a serious plan for this year early enough. So my brain and my heart says YES to the RAID Australia 2022, too. Keep on ducking and keep save all over the world!! With a big cheers from Cologne, Germany Jo

I think you're correct in postponing until 2022. Too many unknowns this year, 2021, to make any decisions yet. Cheers to all, and a happy and prosperous 2021!

I also agree that there are too many unknowns and variables for any international Raid in Australia, so postponing till 2022 is the better alternative. It also saves any clashes with the World Meeting of 2CV Friends in Switzerland and the raids that occur both before and or after that event so that people can use their holidays fully for both.

Dear Chris Thank you very much for your message. We often worry if it will work out with the Raid this year. After all, we have to ship our cars (2 from France and ours) by the end of May. Since we are both working, we also have to decide as soon as possible whether to take our longer vacation or not. For you no easy decision, whether one can say in the spring already for August definitely like the situation for 2021 is. Of course we would love to participate, as it is also the first time for us. But this pandemic and the strict laws in your country, that will not be easy! Hope dies last! Stay healthy and we are waiting for your decision. Best regards from Switzerland Martina and Roland Brändli

Hi Chris, I agree with postponing to 2022, but think a local RAID is in order with a start on Saturday 31st July 2021 at 9am to Back of Beyond with campfires, a beef & veg hot pot in the camp oven and damper on the side to soak up the gravy with a drop of red to wash it down. Any one interested? : - )

Hi Chris, would've love to have done Raid 2020 this year, but agree with yourself and everyone else, with the current uncertainties it's not practical, especially for the international participants.

Not every potential Raider is on Facebook so it would be good if someone would email all these people to canvas their thoughts, too. But, by all means, all Aussies should particpate in local raids of their own smaller groups.
