Dear Raiders and interested parties
Entries for Raid Australia 2024 have now closed and herein in this site we have included a list of those who have registered. If you believe you have registered, would you please check this list to ensure it is correct. Any discrepancies should be reported to Elizabeth, our registrar; there is a contact form on the 2024 Raiders List.
The draft itinerary document herein has been updated to include details of the new start location in Brookton. The route and dates will remain the same except that there may be some detail differences in terms of where campsites, caravan parks and meals are located.
Now is a good time to start preparing your car, if you have not done so already. The most significant item to consider is the chassis. After-market chassis have generally proved to
be adequate for raids in the past, but original chassis with rust are suspect. If you have one of these, it is recommended to either replace it or to strengthen it by welding in strengthening plates between the front cross member mountings and the front spring-pot mountings.
Other things to consider are tyres. A new or good set is desirable for this raid. Also with shock absorbers, it is strongly recommended that heavy duty ones are not fitted as these can cause breakages elsewhere in the system.
Fitting of a UHF radio is highly recommended for this raid also for communication on the road. There is a complete raid preparation document elsewhere on this site.
At this point it is probably worth mentioning that there will be a stretch of approximately 800 km between Ilkurlka Roadhouse and Coober Pedy, where there will be no fuel available. We are organising that there will be adequate supplies available at Ilkurlka to cover the needs of all of our raid vehicles at that point. We recommend that a standard 602 2CV with a 25 litre tank will need to carry a full tank plus approximately another 40 litres of fuel on this stretch and you are encouraged to carry enough fuel containers from the start to cover this. We think that the last place where fuel containers will be readily available will be in Kalgoorlie.
For this reason, everyone is encouraged to travel light i.e. don’t bring any heavy items that you don’t really need.
Another matter of importance is about permits. The raid committee will organise the permits for the indigenous communities along the way, but the permit for Tourist Access to the Woomera Prohibited Area must be applied for and obtained individually for all vehicles in the group.
Further information will be provided as it becomes available here and through the Raid Australia Facebook page.
Cheers
