Hi Chris. I have read your latest news bulletin dated 7/2 regarding the fuel and water requirements for Ilkurlka Road house to CooberPedy. It states that in addition to a full fuel tank we should carry 40 litres spare fuel plus 20 litres water for 5 days. For the cars with 2 people in them they will need double this amount of water and realistically I think that for 5 days in the desert 4 litres per person per day won’t be enough. This will be a lot of weight in the cars. For the single occupant cars it is probably ok weight wise but those with 2 occupants may struggle and break cars.
Hi Paul, at the end of the day it will be up to individual raiders to decide what they will carry. We are only providing guidelines. I think the 20 litres of water was designed for cars with one person and so a 2 person car may need more. It will depend a lot on how you use the water on that stretch also.
It is true that cars will be heavily laden initially on this stretch, but the load will gradually reduce as you consume the fuel and water. One car on the survey had 2 people and the relevant supplies needed and got through okay. We have raised this as an issue mainly to encourage people to travel light on the raid.
Cheers, Chris
Thanks Chris. We are working hard to save weight.
