Planning is underway for Raid Australia 2020 and the consensus is that it will be held in August 2020, however the exact dates haven’t been decided. A committee has (largely) been formed.
The proposed route is a west/east crossing of the continent, with some similarities to the first raid, Raid 88. The proposed starting point is Bunbury WA or somewhere else near Perth, then going to Wave Rock, Kalgoorlie, Laverton and across the Ann Beadell Highway to Coober Pedy. Then we will travel to William Creek, Marree and up the Birdsville Track to Birdsville. After that there are a few options, but we could possibly go to Longreach, maybe Gayndah and then finishing at Coffs Harbour or Bellingen in NSW.
The final route will not be finalised until surveying has been undertaken. The survey will be commenced this year, in August 2018, but may not be finalised until August 2019. A group from the ACE Club in WA has kindly offered to survey the route from the start to Coober Pedy, as part of a club trip this August.
The routes chosen should be suitable for 2CVs, but surveying will confirm this.
This will be a tough raid, with lots of desert crossings and bush camps.
Consequently, cars will need to be prepared to a high standard, especially in terms of having a sound chassis. Also, we will need to travel light, as there will be sections where extra fuel and water will need to be carried. It will be a 2CV and derivatives only raid, except for support vehicles.
The main source of information for this raid will be the raid website, raidaustralia.com and there is a forum contained in this website. It is anticipated that bookings will not be open and fees will not be finalised for some considerable time.
A meeting/ info session for this raid was held at the Cit-in in Dalby Qld last Easter and a copy of the minutes from that meeting are included in this website.
The committee is willing to receive constructive comments or feedback at this time.
Cheers bastards,
Chris Bennet
